New Phone System

by | Nov 8, 2016

We’ve been using Asterisk and FreePBX for a couple of years now. We installed it in a virtual computer and it worked pretty good. We needed to re-purpose the server.

I found the RasPBX project. This is a Linux distribution that is configured with Asterisk and FreePBX on a Raspberry Pi computer. If you’ve never heard of a Raspberry Pi, it is a series of credit card-sized single-board computers developed in the United Kingdom by the Raspberry Pi Foundation to promote the teaching of basic computer science in schools and developing countries. You can use it for all sorts of thing: Surveillance cameras, media server, file server, desktop computer, games, Minecraft, and a phone server.

We have been running the RasPBX setup for a couple of weeks now and it is working really well. It uses very little power and easy to configure and administer.

$35 – Raspberry Pi 3
$10 – Case
$10 – Power Cord
$7 – 8 GB Micro SD Card
$62.00 Total

You do need VoIP phones to work with this setup. We purchased Panasonic KX-TGP550 cordless handsets.

You will also need a VoIP service provider. We use voip.ms

For 3 phone lines, our bill is rarely over $25 per month..
