Fast InternetBy now most of you with CDE as your Internet provider are excited about the speed increases from 50 Mbps to 250 Mbps. This is awesome, especially since there is no additional charge. However, most people’s router is only capable of 100 Mbps. So you are going to need a new router to take advantage of the new speed. You may also need a new network switch if your current one is only 100 Mbps. If you have an old computer, it may only have a 100 Mb network card.

Ethernet networks support speeds of 10 Mbps, 100 Mbps, 1000 Mbps and 10,000 Mbps. Almost all computers in the last 5-6 years support 1000 Mbps or 1 GB network speeds. Most Internet providers basic speed is 25-60 Mbps, so a 100 Mbps router is no big deal. CDE just broke the ceiling for the average person in our area.

Something else to understand is even if you have a gigabit router, your wireless may only max out at 100+ Mbps. You almost never achieve the maximum speeds so if you are testing from wireless, you may not get the real speed of your Internet connection. Make sure you plug into an Ethernet connection.

If you are not sure about the speed of your router, switch or computer, give us a call or just email us back and we will be happy to look up the information for you. We will need the model numbers of your router and/or switch.

Yesterday we started getting phone calls from customers stating that they did not notice any increase in speeds. So we checked our own connect and it was still at 50 Mbps. So I called CDE and they told me they would need to move us to a new port. They needed to come out for a service call. Of course they find a problem and our Internet was down for a few hours. But Josh and the other techs at CDE Commercial support were great and made sure we were back online as soon as possible.

You are going to need to test your speed from CDE’s own speed test website. Other sites have you connect to other servers and they may not be as fast as your new connection.

Here are our results:

Download Upload
speedtest.cdelightband.net 262.05 Mbps 241.31 Mbps
speedtest.net 217.62 Mbps 180.99 Mbps
fast.com 120 Mbps NA

Does this mean that we will now download at 250 Mbps? Maybe. It depends on the website. But the thing to understand is you have more bandwidth to do more stuff. Say you are downloading two files. Each site has a maximum speed of 100 Mb. Now you can download both files at full speed from both sites and no one will ever notice. Streaming HD video will have less effect on everyone else on the network. And if you used remote desktop or VPNs, everything will be so much smoother.
